 BMW X1

The exterior of the BMW X1.

Agility + Elegance = Joy. The new BMW X1 formula. At first glance a compact X model, on second glance the challenge of getting to know something new. It starts with the design: rising lateral lines lend the new BMW X1 a dynamic shape, while short overhangs and a sloping rear windscreen create a sporty, elegant silhouette. At the front, the distinctively shaped bonnet and the three-eye look of the headlights make for a striking impact, while the L-shaped taillights in conjunction with the horizontal flow of lines visually broaden the rear. All told, the design of the BMW X1 has a very simple message: it is joy in material form.

Joy is always simple: The interior of the BMW X1.

Ergonomic design needs no lengthy explanation; it's something you sense immediately. That's why everything in the cabin of the new BMW X1 is geared towards one simple goal: intuitive operation with the maximum feel-good factor. The entire cockpit is oriented towards the driver and, thanks to its clear lines, guides the eyes to the road ahead. The raised seating position provides a particularly good overview, including of the interior: high-end materials, perfectly attuned colours, outstanding workmanship, and many convenient details.

The Auto Start Stop function in the BMW X1.

When you next come across a stop sign or red light, or join the end of a traffic queue, it won’t just be your car that comes to a rest. Auto Start Stop automatically switches off your engine whenever you’re stationary and in neutral, saving fuel and cutting CO2 emissions. Simply depress the clutch and the engine restarts automatically.

Available only with the manual X1 xDrive20d.

The four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW X1.

Diesel engines are still good for surprises. The BMW X1 features the world‘s first four-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo. Alongside the ultra-lightweight aluminium engine block, two different-sized turbochargers are deployed sequentially to deliver blistering power of up to 150 kW (204 hp) at any speed range. At the same time, fuel consumption is a surprisingly frugal 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Brake Energy Regeneration in the BMW X1.

Brake and now you’ll no longer just slow yourself down; you’ll be able to keep your car moving. Whenever you apply the brakes, or take your foot off the accelerator and coast, the normally wasted energy is recycled. Brake Energy Regeneration uses this energy to recharge the battery, reducing the demand on your engine, the fuel you consume and CO2 emissions.

Gear shift indicator in the BMW X1.

Changing through the gears of a BMW has always been part of what makes the driving experience so thrilling. Thanks to the gear shift indicator, you can greatly improve your fuel efficiency, too. A dashboard display highlights the best gear to select for the greatest possible economy. But the system also recognizes a desire for rapid acceleration, in which case the indicator will kick in at a higher rpm range. Following its recommendation and changing at the right time significantly reduces the amount of fuel you use and the emissions you generate.

Available only with the manual X1 xDrive20d.

The six-speed transmission in the BMW X1.

Smooth and responsive, the 6-speed manual transmission in the BMW X1 makes for dynamic driving at its best. Its standout features are the short-throw shifts, perfect ratios and optimum exploitation of torque. The closely spaced gear ratios and the addition of a sixth gear enable the driver to make even more individual use of the engine's characteristics. The optional 6-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth driving with exceptional reaction speed, combining instant power when pulling out and reduced fuel consumption at high speeds. Both transmission systems provide maximum dynamic performance in the full speed range and unmatched efficiency for short and long distances alike.

xDrive on the BMW X1.

Superior dynamics on every surface: xDrive is the all-wheel drive system which feeds engine power to both axles of the BMW X1 as the situation requires. As the driver, you can enjoy the X1's power and agility to the full because this intelligent system automatically adapts to the terrain you are driving on. Whether you are on a twisting road, attempting a hill start or tackling slippery surfaces, maximum traction is guaranteed.

Performance Control in the BMW X1.

This optional technology for xDrive models uses dynamic engine and braking intervention to improve cornering behaviour, thus boosting driving pleasure and enhancing safety at the same time. Through targeted braking, optimal torque is distributed to the individual wheels depending on the driving situation. Performance Control also optimises engine performance management by gently breaking the rear wheel on the inside of the bend while at the same time increasing torque to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This allows for particularly dynamic conerning with the best possible grip. The new BMW X1 also responds to steering commands more spontaneously, for increased agility and sporty driving.

Servotronic power steering in the BMW X1.

The optional Servotronic power steering in the BMW X1 xDrive20d and xDrive23d ensures optimal steering responsiveness in any situation. Servotronic adjusts the amount of steering assistance to suit the current speed, enhancing driver comfort by lowering the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. It provides light-footed responsiveness and agility at higher speeds and effortless agility when parking or in narrow, angular curves.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) in the BMW X1.

Off-road driving requires a light touch: slightly increased wheel slip and light drifts are actually a plus in certain situations. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) does just that: as an adjunct to Dynamic Stability Control, DTC optimises propulsive power and enables a more sporting driving style. The increased tolerance for wheel slip also facilitates initial acceleration on loose surfaces such as sand, gravel or snow. DSC takes a back seat and intervenes only when absolutely necessary. If desired, DSC can be completely deactivated.

The Semi Command Position in the BMW X1.

The raised seating position in the BMW X1 affords comfortable access to the dashboard and a good overview of traffic. The entire cockpit, with its modern design concept, is oriented towards the driver and, thanks to its clear lines, guides the eyes to the road ahead. In addition, a generous sense of spaciousness is created by the long wheelbase and excellent headroom. Start the engine with the push of a button and activate key functions with the greatest of ease. The intuitive operational concept is geared towards one simple goal: Everything is under control.

The flexible interior of the BMW X1.

The BMW X1 is as flexible as you want it to be. Its interior can be spontaneously adjusted to meet your individual requirements. Whether you need room for five people or want to transport bulky items such as bicycles, the required space can always be made available in no time at all. Always stay on top of the practical aspects of life with a multitude of pockets and trays, including a glasses compartment in the driver's side roofliner; a centre console on the dashboard; bottle holders located in each of the front and rear doors; storage nets on the front seat backrests; and up to five attachable cup holders. More storage space means more possibilities.

The flexible rear seat bench in the BMW X1.

Go ahead and invite all of your friends! Whether you're out shopping, skiboarding or riding your mountain bike – the new BMW X1 covers just about everything. The rear seat bench can be split 40:20:40, so the new BMW X1 can meet a wide range of needs. Up to four pairs of skis or two snowboards can be transported, for instance, while still retaining four seats. Rear passengers can, of course, also enjoy the pleasant sense of space in the new BMW X1. Thanks to seat backrests that can be tilted as required, passengers can choose between greater comfort and extra luggage space.

The iDrive operating concept in the BMW X1.

Press right for next, left for back and turn to select: That’s it, you’ve now mastered the optional iDrive Controller. Coupled with the direct menu control buttons, functions including CD, radio, navigation and telephone can be used intuitively. iDrive stands for extremely easy and logical operation, the largest monitor (8.8-inch) in the segment, a sharper picture, full-screen mode for map displays, 3D route maps and much more. True to the modern design concept of the BMW X1, the high-resolution, anti-glare display is optimally positioned in the driver’s line of vision.

The rear view camera in the BMW X1.

Keep track of your surroundings during difficult manoeuvres: The optional rear view camera clearly shows the area behind the vehicle as a deskewed, 120-degree wide-angle image on the Control Display. Interactive guidelines indicate, for example, if a parking space is large enough for the vehicle. If the BMW has a tow bar, the image area is enlarged, allowing you to dock without the help of another person. The rear view camera is automatically activated when reverse gear is engaged (in conjunction with a navigation system).

Dynamic Cruise Control for the BMW X1.

Your feet deserve a break. The optional Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) in the BMW X1 provides you with relaxed driving pleasure, especially over longer distances. Starting at approx. 30 km/h, the driver can store and maintain the desired driving speed using the left-hand steering column stalk without setting foot on a pedal. Of course, Dynamic Cruise Control can be deactivated at any time using the gas or brake pedals. In that case, the memory function can restore the most recent driving speed at the push of a button.

Adaptive Headlights in the BMW X1.

A winding road at night. Adaptive Headlights optimally illuminate bends – thanks to swivelling headlights – as soon as the driver turns the wheel. The turning light is automatically activated either at a standstill when the indicator is used or, on the move, when heavy steering lock is applied. In addition, dynamic headlight range control raises and lowers the Xenon headlights depending on the driving speed. In urban situations, headlights are lowered for optimal illuminatation of the road ahead without blinding the oncoming traffic, whereas on extra-urban roads, they are raised for increased visibility. Adaptive Headlights help to keep the essentials in view at all times.

Active safety in the BMW X1.

Prevent accidents before they occur: that’s the key to safe driving. BMW’s intelligent road safety systems provide a better view and peace of mind. But in the event that a potentially dangerous situation does occur, a fine-tuned system of suspension, engine management and brakes helps the driver to confidently overcome the situation through precise control. And in case of a tyre blowout, special side reinforcements in the optional run-flat tyres enable continued driving for up to 250 kilometres.

Passive safety in the BMW X1.

Safety comes in numbers – in the number of details: the bodyshell of the BMW X1 is constructed from new generation steel that absorbs forces in the deformation zones while load paths divert impact energy away from the passengers. Crash-activated headrests and the latest generation of front and side airbags offer further passenger protection.
